Anthropic’s Claude Sees a Surge in Popularity Among Paying Customers

by admin

Anthropic has gained significant consumer traction amidst its ongoing dispute with the Department of Defense (DOD), highlighted by witty Super Bowl advertisements that mock rival OpenAI’s practices. The increasing notoriety of its AI model, Claude, has translated into a surge of paid subscribers, as evidenced by a TechCrunch analysis of anonymised credit card transactions from 28 million U.S. consumers conducted by the analytics firm Indagari.

While exact figures for Claude’s user base remain undisclosed by Anthropic—estimates range from 18 million to 30 million—there are notable trends. Claimed paid subscriptions have reportedly more than doubled this year. Particularly striking is the record increase in consumer subscriptions between January and February, with many previous users rejoining the platform during this period.

Indagari’s data highlights that most new subscribers are opting for the basic “Pro” tier at $20 per month. The growth trend appears to be persistent, with figures indicating continued increases into early March.

The interest in Claude can partly be attributed to the company’s entertaining Super Bowl ads that criticized ChatGPT for serving advertisements to its users, promising that Claude would not engage in similar practices. This marketing strategy proved effective and resonated with potential users.

However, tension escalated in late January when reports emerged detailing Anthropic’s objections to the DOD’s intended use of its AI technologies for lethal autonomous operations and surveillance. This confrontation was further aggravated by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s public statement outlining the risks associated with military usage of its technology, leading to the DOD labelling the company a supply risk and prompting ongoing legal disputes.

The uptick in new users aligns with the media coverage of this conflict, particularly between the late January reports and Amodei’s statement in February.

In addition to the publicity surrounding the DOD feud, recent product launches, including Claude Code and Claude Cowork, have contributed to a rise in subscriptions. A newly released feature known as Computer Use enhances Claude’s capabilities by allowing it to perform tasks independently on users’ devices, further incentivising potential subscribers and differentiating offerings from free-tier users.

Despite these advancements and growing consumer interest, Claude still trails significantly behind ChatGPT in terms of overall subscriber numbers. Although OpenAI faced user uninstalls following their own military agreement, it continues to experience rapid subscriber growth and remains the leading consumer AI platform.
