Anthropic Secures $3.5 Billion to Propel Its AI Aspirations

by admin

AI startup Anthropic has today declared that it has successfully secured $3.5 billion in funding, achieving a post-money valuation of $61.5 billion, with Lightspeed Venture Partners leading the round.

The Series E funding round also attracted investments from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures, bringing the total funds raised by the company to $18.2 billion, as noted by Crunchbase.

“This investment will enable Anthropic to enhance its development of advanced AI systems, boost its computing capabilities, deepen its research into mechanistic interpretability and alignment, and expedite its global scaling,” the company noted in a blog update. “With this foundation, Anthropic is dedicated to creating AI systems that can genuinely collaborate, working in tandem with teams to address complex challenges, synthesize information across disciplines, and assist organizations in making a significant impact.”

The substantial funding round for Anthropic arrives shortly after the unveiling of the company’s latest flagship AI model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet. This “hybrid reasoning” model is designed to assess inquiries more thoughtfully before offering responses. It is part of Anthropic’s larger initiative to streamline the user experience surrounding its AI solutions. Currently, many AI chatbots present users with a complex model selection that requires them to choose from multiple options varying in cost and capability. Anthropic aims for a simpler process where one model can seamlessly handle all tasks.

Anthropic is on an upward trajectory. Reportedly, the company’s annual revenue run rate was nearly $1 billion last year, with a 30% increase observed this year alone. However, the company is heavily investing in the development of its AI systems, with projections indicating a burn rate of $3 billion for the year, according to The Information.

To drive revenue growth, Anthropic is pivoting some of its attention toward launching new tools and subscription offerings, including computer-using “agents,” a desktop client, and dedicated enterprise and “team” tiers, alongside mobile applications. The company has also expanded into Europe, attracting notable talent like Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma, and former OpenAI safety researcher Jan Leike.

Founded in 2021 by Amodei, a former VP of research at OpenAI, Anthropic was established after differences over the company’s direction led to his departure. Amodei brought several former OpenAI team members along, including the ex-policy lead, Jack Clark.

Anthropic consistently seeks to position itself as a more safety-conscious alternative to OpenAI.
