Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has expressed concerns about the potential for espionage, particularly from Chinese sources, targeting valuable “algorithmic secrets” from leading AI firms in the U.S. He is advocating for government intervention.
During a presentation at a Council on Foreign Relations event on Monday, Amodei highlighted China’s reputation for extensive industrial espionage and noted that AI companies, including his own, are likely on their radar.
“Many of these algorithmic secrets have values that can reach $100 million and may consist of just a few lines of code,” he remarked. “I’m confident there are individuals attempting to steal this information, and they might be succeeding.”
Amodei further emphasized the importance of additional support from the U.S. government to mitigate this threat, although he did not specify what kind of assistance he believes is necessary.
While Anthropic declined to provide a direct comment to TechCrunch regarding Amodei’s statements, they pointed to their recommendations submitted to the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) earlier this month.
In their submission, Anthropic contends that the federal government should collaborate with leaders in the AI sector to strengthen security measures at advanced AI laboratories. This could involve partnership with U.S. intelligence agencies and their international counterparts.
Amodei’s statements reflect his increasingly critical perspective on China’s advancements in AI. He has previously advocated for strict export controls on AI chips destined for China, while commenting that DeepSeek performed poorly on a crucial bioweapons data safety evaluation conducted by Anthropic.
His concerns, elaborated in his essay titled “Machines of Loving Grace” and other platforms, revolve around the potential misuse of AI by China for authoritative governance and military applications.
This perspective has drawn criticism from segments of the AI community, who suggest that the U.S. and China should enhance their collaboration in AI development to prevent an arms race that could lead to uncontrollable advanced systems.
