Android Gmail Users Can Now Interact with Gemini for Email Conversations

by admin

Android-based Gmail app users now have the ability to engage in conversations with Google’s AI helper, Gemini, about their email content directly within the app. This enhancement, dubbed Gmail Q&A, was released on Thursday for Gemini subscribers, as detailed in a blog announcement, and plans are in place to extend this service to iOS gadgets.

The introduction of Gmail Q&A allows users to leverage the Google Gemini feature within the Gmail app, turning it into a virtual assistant proficient in browsing your entire email collection. According to Google, you can prompt Gemini to provide summaries of your emails, for example, by requesting, “Give me an overview of the emails related to quarterly planning.” Additionally, the capability enables targeted inquiries, such as querying Gemini with, “What was the expenditure for our last marketing event?”

Nevertheless, users might occasionally encounter the so-called hallucinations common to even the most advanced AI systems, so a degree of skepticism towards its responses might be wise.

Historically, Gmail users seeking information within their inbox would primarily utilize the top-of-page search feature. This method remains available, but now it is complemented by the addition of a Gemini activation button positioned beside the search field. This reflects Google’s strategic move from traditional search methods towards an AI-driven conversational interface. Rather than manually searching for the email, Gmail encourages users to utilize an AI chatbot for summarizing desired information, with the bot still referencing the original email in its response.

Subscribers can access this novel feature through the black star icon, which symbolizes Gemini across Google’s range of applications, located in the upper-right section of the app. At present, Gmail Q&A can only interact with your emails, though Google plans to broaden its connectivity to include files stored on your Drive account in the future.

In June, the Gmail Q&A feature was introduced to web-based Gmail users subscribed to either Gemini or the Google One AI Premium service. These subscribers pay approximately $20 monthly for access to AI functionalities such as this, indicative of Google’s broader strategy to envelop Gemini within its product and application layers.

It appears unlikely that Gmail Q&A will be made available to users of the free Gmail service in the near term. Google seems to be using premium features like Gmail Q&A as an incentive for users to see value in the monthly subscription costs associated with Gemini. The integration of Gemini across Google’s suite of products, including Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Calendar, represents a monetization effort of the Gemini AI technology, although at a premium.
