An Extensive Overview of Tech Layoffs in 2025

by admin

As we move through 2025, the tech industry continues experiencing significant layoffs, following a turbulent year in which over 150,000 jobs were cut across nearly 550 companies in 2024, according to Layoffs.fyi. This year, more than 22,000 tech workers have already lost their jobs, with February alone accounting for over 16,000 cuts.

The ongoing layoffs highlight the industry’s shift towards automation and artificial intelligence, raising concerns about the future of innovation and the human cost involved. A comprehensive list has been compiled to track these job cuts, demonstrating the effects on various companies and sectors.

As of May 2025, notable layoffs include CrowdStrike, which reduced its global workforce by 5% (approximately 500 employees) to streamline operations. General Fusion, a Vancouver-based startup, has cut 25% of its headcount amid its efforts to develop fusion energy technology. Similarly, Match has announced a 13% workforce reduction to enhance organisational efficiency.

April saw over 23,000 job cuts, with major companies like NetApp and Electronic Arts also letting go of hundreds of employees to realign their strategies. Expedia’s layoffs affected about 3% of its workforce, primarily in product and tech roles, following previous cuts in March targeting marketing teams.

In March, another 8,834 jobs were eliminated, including large reductions at Block (931 employees) and Northvolt, which laid off 62% of its staff as it faced bankruptcy. Siemens announced plans to cut around 5,600 jobs globally in a bid to improve competitiveness in automation and electric vehicle charging.

February brought drastic cuts as well, with GrubHub slashing 500 positions, while Autodesk announced it would let go of 1,350 employees. Other prominent firms, including Google and Meta, also undertook restructuring that led to significant layoffs.

January saw approximately 2,400 job cuts, with the likes of Amazon and Stripe announcing layoffs as part of their strategic adjustments amid economic uncertainty.

These trends in the tech sector indicate a challenging landscape for workers and an evolving focus for companies increasingly leaning on AI and automation, underscoring the delicate balance between innovation and the human cost associated with these transitions. Regular updates will continue to track the impact of these changes across the industry.
