On Monday, Amazon revealed that the North England town of Darlington has been chosen as the inaugural location for its upcoming U.K. drone delivery initiative.
Originally, Amazon anticipated the rollout of Prime Air to the U.K. and Italy in 2024. However, after missing that deadline, the company refrained from providing a new timeline for its latest launch. Instead, Amazon stated in its communication that it is still in the preliminary phases, emphasizing that there is “much work ahead.” The company has yet to submit its planning application to local officials or the Civil Aviation Authority, which is akin to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
“Once those agreements are finalized,” the company explained, “we will start hiring staff to initiate drone delivery.” Amazon has earmarked a specific fulfillment center in the town, which has a population of 107,000. The company will also seek input from Darlington residents concerning the expansion.
Similar to the situation in the United States, the regulatory environment in the U.K. serves as a significant early obstacle for Amazon’s expansion aspirations. This is partly why the company has favored less congested cities and towns for its testing phase, rather than navigating the heavily regulated airspace over major cities like New York or London.

Prime Air was first launched in June 2022 in Lockeford, California, followed by an expansion to College Station, Texas the next month.
However, Amazon suspended its California deliveries in April 2024, citing a strategy to “focus [its] resources.” The company continues to operate in College Station and initiated a service in West Valley, Phoenix in November. Furthermore, Amazon has hinted at a third U.S. location that has yet to be officially confirmed.
So far, Prime Air has successfully delivered “thousands” of packages, aiming to achieve delivery in under an hour using drones developed in-house. Once operational, residents of Darlington will have the option to select Prime Air for specific items on Amazon U.K.
