Amazon Secures More Renewable Energy Than Any Other Company Last Year

by admin

Last year, Amazon significantly increased its renewable energy investments, initiating roughly 100 new projects and raising its total generating capacity to over 33 gigawatts. This figure surpasses its closest rival, Apple, by more than 10 gigawatts.

As a result of these investments, Amazon has emerged as the leading corporate buyer of renewable energy, as reported by BloombergNEF. The company’s energy portfolio consists of a balanced mix of large-scale wind and solar farms as well as on-site solar initiatives. Collectively, this capacity can supply energy to approximately 8.3 million households, according to Amazon.

Through its renewable energy and storage partnerships, Amazon has succeeded in minimizing Scope 2 emissions, which represent emissions from electricity that is purchased, even while expanding its data center operations.

However, the company still faces a significant challenge in reducing its overall carbon footprint. Similar to many organizations, Amazon’s most significant emissions stem from Scope 3, which includes activities that are beyond its direct control, such as air travel, leased properties, and construction efforts.

According to Amazon’s 2023 sustainability report, total emissions reached their highest level in 2021 following an extended period of increase. The company’s carbon intensity—a calculation of greenhouse gas emissions relative to gross sales—has also seen a downward trend. (Carbon intensity is a key metric for rapidly growing companies, as growth often leads to higher fossil fuel consumption. Investments in carbon-neutral energy help maintain or reduce carbon intensity relative to total emissions, offering a more favorable narrative.)

Amazon has not yet published its 2024 sustainability report, which will provide deeper insights into the company’s status regarding its 2040 net-zero emissions target.
