The AltStore, an alternate marketplace for iOS applications, has introduced its premier collection of third-party apps within the European Union. This development follows the company’s earlier release of an upgraded app store version in the EU, dubbed AltStore PAL, aimed at complying with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates Apple to permit competition from new entrants.
Included in the initial launch is the torrenting application iTorrent, designed for P2P (peer-to-peer) file downloads, and qBitControl, a qBittorrent interface for iOS users. Also part of the release is PeopleDrop, a social exploratory service aiming to facilitate local connections.
Furthermore, the batch features UTM SE, an emulator for running nostalgic software and games from yesteryears. UTM SE stands out as it’s also accessible on the official iOS App Store, contrasting with the rest which are exclusive to this alternate platform.
AltStore assures that each app in this early rollout has undergone thorough scrutiny to match the platform’s safety criteria. These apps are available through adding them on the “Sources” interface, post which they’re visible under the “Browse” section.
Thanks to the DMA, Apple is now required to create APIs enabling developers to offer apps outside its App Store, sparking the emergence of a competitive app store environment against Apple’s native iOS marketplace.
