AllTrails, a popular hiking and biking app awarded the 2023 iPhone App of the Year, is introducing a new premium membership dubbed “Peak.” This annual subscription, priced at $80, will enhance user experience with AI-driven features designed for avid outdoor enthusiasts. Key additions include the ability to create customised routes, receive real-time trail condition updates, and view trail traffic heatmaps, alongside a unique plant and tree identification capability via smartphone camera.
The “Peak” membership will initially be rolled out to select members over the next few weeks, with a full launch anticipated by June 2023. Interested users can sign up for early access through the AllTrails website.
AllTrails has flourished in popularity, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which spurred a renewed interest in outdoor activities. In 2021, the company secured $150 million in funding to support its growth. However, competition has intensified with Apple adding features such as topographical maps and custom route options to Apple Maps, which could potentially overshadow AllTrails’ offerings.
In light of this competition, AllTrails’ new features in the Peak membership seem to be a strategic response aimed at catering to its most loyal users. One of the standout features allows users to design their ideal trail, utilising an AI tool that can adjust trails for length, steepness, or scenic value. Additionally, a comprehensive weather forecasting tool will track vital information such as temperature, precipitation, and air quality alerts, effectively integrating essential environmental data into the app.
Moreover, the new heatmapping feature will enable users to choose less crowded trails, or opt for busier paths when safety is a concern. This function harnesses data from millions of users to provide insights on trail traffic, similar to the methodology employed by Google Maps.
The Peak membership will also introduce an “Outdoor Lens” feature, allowing members to instantly identify various plants and trees while keeping a log of them within the app, with plans for further expansions of this capability.
Apart from the Peak membership, AllTrails is updating its Base and Plus memberships. The Base offer remains free and provides essential trail maps and user reviews, whereas the Plus membership adds features such as offline access and 3D trail previews. Both tiers will now include a new Points of Interest feature, mapping over 500,000 viewpoints and landmarks, enriching the exploration experience. Additionally, Plus subscribers will gain access to a customised Offline Area function, facilitating downloadable maps for offline use.
AllTrails aims to enhance user engagement and compete effectively by adapting to the evolving outdoor navigation landscape.
