Airbnb Subtly Launches AI-Powered Customer Service Bot Across the U.S.

by admin

Airbnb has begun the rollout of an AI-driven customer service bot in the U.S., a development highlighted by CEO Brian Chesky during the company’s first-quarter earnings call. As of last month, half of Airbnb’s U.S. users are engaging with this new AI feature, with plans for a full rollout to all American users in the current month.

Chesky emphasised that the AI bot is enhancing customer experience, noting a 15% decrease in the need for users to interact with human agents. Previously, Airbnb had only tested the technology on a limited basis for specific queries. Co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk expressed optimism about AI’s potential to reshape consumer interactions in the future.

In contrast to AI-centric firms like OpenAI and Google, Airbnb is adopting a cautious strategy, concentrating on customer service applications before venturing into other areas such as travel planning and ticket bookings. Chesky has stated that he’s mindful of the nascent stage of AI technology.

Meanwhile, rivals such as Expedia and Booking.com are aggressively investing in AI, launching features aimed at itinerary creation, trip planning, and providing real-time travel updates. Despite the competitive landscape, Airbnb’s focus remains on refining its customer service capabilities.

In financial terms, Airbnb reported a revenue of $2.27 billion in the first quarter, representing a 6% increase compared to the same period last year. However, the company also indicated that it anticipates a slight decline in current-quarter revenue, attributing this to external factors such as the global tariff war, which is likely to dampen consumer spending on travel.
