AI startup Cohere has announced its acquisition of Vancouver-based Ottogrid, a firm that creates enterprise tools aimed at streamlining high-level market research processes. Founded by Sully Omarr, Ottogrid revealed the news via a post on X but did not disclose the financial specifics of the deal.
In a statement, Omarr indicated that while Ottogrid’s current product will be phased out, the company will provide its users with ample notice and a reasonable transition period. He expressed enthusiasm about integrating Ottogrid’s capabilities into Cohere’s platform, stating that this partnership would significantly enhance workflow automation, data enrichment, and operational scalability for their clients.
Despite the acquisition, Cohere has been facing financial challenges, having reportedly missed revenue targets by 85% in 2023, according to The Information. However, the company recently announced a positive turn, revealing its annualised revenue has now reached $100 million, thanks to a strategic pivot towards private AI solutions for sectors such as healthcare, government, and finance.
Ottogrid, which initially launched as Cognosys in 2023, underwent a rebranding in October 2024, featuring a significant redesign of its platform with new integrations and tools. Their offerings include a native table interface with AI-driven document analysis, enabling users to extract data easily from websites and enhance sales lead lists automatically. Prior to the acquisition, Ottogrid secured $2 million in venture funding from notable investors, including GV (Google Ventures) and several tech executives.
With this acquisition, Ottogrid will concentrate on developing its capabilities to support Cohere’s new application, North, which provides ChatGPT-like assistance to knowledge workers for tasks such as document summarisation. As Ottogrid integrates into Cohere’s ecosystem, both firms hope to create a more comprehensive suite of tools designed to facilitate sophisticated data tasks and operational efficiency.
