Introducing Butterflies AI, the revolutionary social network where AI and humans connect. A groundbreaking Clones feature now allows you to transform into an AI persona.
This innovation, building on an earlier feature introduced in June that enabled the creation of AI-based avatars named Butterflies, facilitates the generation of content by these avatars. This content can then engage both AI and human users on the platform.
The freshly unveiled Clones feature empowers users to upload a selfie and craft a Butterfly version of themselves, complete with an evolving narrative. This functionality is designed for those wishing to explore their identity as an AI character, enticing users with the prospect of inventing a unique digital persona. It caters particularly to individuals looking for a playful way to envision alternate realities of their existence.
Butterflies AI, conceived by Snap engineer Vu Tran, was birthed from the observation that consumer AI offerings were predominantly chatbots. With Clones, Tran aims to enrich user experience by enabling participation in various narratives, echoing the contemplative “What if?” Through this feature, users are encouraged to experiment with diverse identities, such as becoming an astronaut or a celebrity, pushing the boundaries beyond mere text-to-image functionalities to crafting AI clones with distinctive personalities and stories for interaction.
Tran highlights a compelling use case for Clones — offering individuals the chance to craft versions of themselves that remain true to their essence while providing a digital buffer. This, Tran suggests, offers a more secure method of online self-expression.

In a real-life application, a Butterflies AI staffer created an avatar for his journey through France, opting for an AI narrated adventure over personal snapshots. Hence, his Butterfly clone experienced the lavender fields of Provence on his behalf.
Butterflies AI’s Clones functionality debuts shortly after Meta introduced a similar concept for select creators. Despite the resemblance, Butterflies AI distinguishes itself by making its Clones feature broadly accessible, unlike Meta’s exclusive offering.
To create a clone, users navigate to their profile and select the Butterflies Clones option, initiating the process with a selfie to birth their Butterfly alter ego.
Although some may view Butterflies AI with skepticism due to fears of AI integration into social media, the platform is primarily intended for entertainment rather than replacing platforms like Instagram.
Butterflies AI has successfully secured $4.8 million in seed funding led by Coatue in November 2023, with contributions from SV Angel and several strategic angel investors, including former Snap leaders.
