Agility’s Humanoid Robots Set to Manage Your Spanx Handling Tasks

by admin

Until recently, the humanoid robotics sector seemed to be a realm of speculative ventures and trial projects. Though these initiatives play a crucial role in the future implementation of groundbreaking technologies, they typically involve a limited number of units and rarely evolve into larger-scale applications. However, on Thursday, Agility revealed its entrance into a significant agreement with the logistics behemoth GXO following an encouraging pilot program.

The initial assignment for Digit will involve the transportation of plastic totes within a Spanx facility in Georgia, a task that is quite straightforward and should not be misinterpreted as anything else. The exact number of bipedal robots tasked with transferring crates from collaborative robots (cobots) to conveyor belts has not been disclosed by either company, suggesting the scale of deployment remains modest. Disclosure of larger deployments involving tens or hundreds of thousands of units would likely be made public by the concerned parties.

The provision of these systems under a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) arrangement allows customers to avoid the substantial initial outlay associated with acquiring such complex technology directly, while still benefiting from ongoing support and software enhancements.

GXO initiated pilot tests with Digit robots the previous year. The logistics company has also embarked on a pilot initiative with Apptronik, one of Agility’s main rivals, as recently announced. The impact of this development on their partnership with Agility remains to be seen.

Peggy Johnson, who assumed the role of CEO at Agility in March, has emphasized the company’s dedication to return on investment (ROI), a noteworthy approach in a field where outcomes are often speculative.

“The humanoid robot industry is poised for numerous breakthroughs in the forthcoming years, and I’m immensely proud that Agility leads the way with real humanoid robots operational at a client’s facility, generating income and addressing tangible business challenges,” Johnson remarked. “Agility’s commitment to the paramount metric of delivering value to our clients by engaging Digit in meaningful tasks signifies a pivotal achievement for us and sets a new standard for the entire sector.”

With its headquarters in Oregon, Agility has consistently led the market in both development and commercialization, making its latest achievement less of a surprise. Nonetheless, the industry remains in its infancy, and a definitive market leader has yet to be identified.

Amazon commenced trials with Agility’s systems in its distribution centers last October, but a formal update on their progress has yet to be announced by either entity.
