Creator platform Patreon is making adjustments to its app to align with Apple’s App Store guidelines following a recent update that allowed U.S. users to make purchases via the web. The company announced that its web-based checkout is now the default for U.S. patrons, but the app must now open this checkout in an external browser, in accordance with Apple’s instructions.

While this change results in additional steps for users wanting to complete payments directly through Patreon, it enables the platform to avoid Apple’s 30% commission on in-app purchases. Earlier, Patreon updated its app shortly after a court ruling in the Apple-Epic case, which compelled Apple to support external payments without charging a commission. The latest iOS app update included options for diverse payment methods, including credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay, initially within an in-app browser. Now, however, users will be redirected to an external browser for checkout as per Apple’s feedback.

Additionally, the update allows creators using older billing models, such as first-of-the-month or per-creation payments, to retain payment acceptance through the app. Previously, Apple’s restrictions limited options for creators using legacy billing, enforcing a reliance on its own in-app purchase system.

Patreon highlighted that this new flexibility could positively affect creators’ revenue streams. U.S. users will soon have the ability to buy memberships at the price set by creators directly within the app; however, for new memberships outside the U.S., creators are still required to use subscription billing.

Currently, around 95% of active creators on the platform are already using subscription billing, which offers benefits such as free trials and discounts. The update, therefore, could assist the remaining 5% of creators who prefer alternative billing methods.

Moreover, Patreon has indicated that the prior deadline imposed by Apple, which mandated all creators transition to the iOS in-app purchase system by November 2025, has been lifted. In a blog post, the company revealed its ongoing dialogue with Apple aimed at securing a more flexible approach for creators, providing them with ample time and options to decide on their billing methods.

Overall, these changes are designed to empower creators while ensuring compliance with Apple’s guidelines, thereby allowing Patreon to maintain a competitive edge without incurring excessive fees.
