Snapchat has officially introduced native iPad support, as revealed in the application’s most recent update notes. Since its inception in 2011, Snapchat has been accessible on iPads only through an iPhone version of the app, which was surrounded by prominent black borders, rather than being optimized for the iPad’s larger display.
This enhancement brings native iPad support to users 13 years after Snapchat’s debut on the iOS platform.
“Snapchat is now natively supported on iPad,” according to the notes from the App Store release. “This update enables Snapchat to utilize the full screen of an iPad, offering a bigger venue for creating Snaps and allowing an enhanced view of friends on the 2nd and 4th tabs.”
The updated application improves accessibility on the iPad and acts as a platform for testing new functionalities, giving users a chance to explore tools, augmented reality (AR) experiences, and artificial intelligence (AI) features on a larger screen. Snap has not shared the reasons behind their delayed iPad support, nor have they mentioned any specific new features designed for iPad users.
However, it’s important to point out that the updated application has not been fully adapted for tablet use, as it still operates solely in portrait mode and does not support landscape orientation.
The introduction of this native application follows TikTok’s update from the previous year, which aimed to enhance the user experience on larger screens, including iPads and other tablets, by enabling landscape mode usage and easier app navigation. By launching native iPad support, Snapchat is strategically positioning itself to compete with TikTok and aims to attract more users to Spotlight, its own competitor to TikTok.
Moreover, it’s significant to highlight that Instagram has not yet released a native app for the iPad, presenting Snapchat and TikTok an opportunity to gain a competitive advantage over the Meta-owned platform.
