Renowned Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz is lending its support to a promising UK startup, Dex, which aims to revolutionise the recruitment process through innovative AI technology. Dex seeks to enhance the matchmaking between businesses and potential candidates, significantly improving employee retention.
The brainchild of former Atomico employees Harry Uglow (CTO) and Paddy Lambros (CEO), Dex has already attracted around two dozen tech companies, including notable UK unicorns. The platform, currently in a closed beta phase, is poised for a wider rollout later this year, bolstered by a recent pre-seed funding round that raised $3.1 million from a16z’s Speedrun fund and Concept Ventures, alongside contributions from various industry angels.
As AI continues to permeate recruitment, Dex positions itself in a competitive landscape, offering a comprehensive platform specifically designed to understand candidates’ profiles deeply. Marketed as an “AI voice talent agent,” Dex engages candidates in conversations to assess their experience, skills, and career aspirations. Once this profile is established, Dex provides tailored career guidance, identifies suitable job opportunities, and assists with interview preparation and salary negotiations.
Uniquely, Dex caters to both passive candidates—those not actively seeking jobs—and those eager for new opportunities. The platform continuously monitors job postings and alerts candidates about roles that fit their profiles, effectively taking over the tedious aspects of job searching.
In Lambros’s words, “Dex talks through what you want — your preferences and needs.” The AI simplifies the application process by eliminating the need for traditional CVs or cover letters, directly introducing candidates to hiring managers if a match is identified.
With improvements to the platform continually integrating advancements from multiple large language model providers—including OpenAI and Google—the technology behind Dex remains cutting edge.
On the employer’s side, Dex collaborates with recruitment teams to identify their ideal candidate traits, merging feedback with vast public datasets. This dual approach ensures that the recommendations generated by Dex are personalised and aligned with both candidates and hiring managers’ visions for an ideal fit.
Now with funding secured, Dex is enhancing its engineering and marketing teams while preparing for a public launch in the UK, with plans for future international expansion. Lambros emphasises that the initiative is not merely about filling positions but rather about fostering enduring partnerships that benefit employees and organisations alike, ultimately aiming to empower people to find work that resonates with their passions.
