A Start-Up’s Innovative Approach to Tackling Climate Change Through Supporting Plumbers

Initially, HERO Software‘s creators aimed at combating the climate crisis, not realizing their venture would evolve into a significant support system for small construction trades. Nevertheless, they have recently secured €40 million in a Series B funding round, setting the stage for their expansion throughout Europe.

As a Green Party activist and a researcher on solar technologies, Dr. Michael Kessler, one of the co-founders, shared with TechCrunch, “My focus during my PhD was on solar as a method to reduce CO2 emissions.”

“In Germany, the construction industry is a major contributor to CO2 emissions. Our goal was to accelerate the energy transition within this sector. We discovered that the pace was hampered by the scarcity of tradespeople for tasks such as installing solar panels or heat pumps,” Kessler revealed.

He further revealed, “Initially, our mission centered on climate action, by facilitating job opportunities for tradespeople to install heat pumps and other energy-saving measures, thereby reducing the emissions from buildings. It evolved into creating a comprehensive platform serving the broader needs of tradespeople.”

HERO Software, established in 2020 by Kessler and Philipp Lyding in Hanover, was designed to simplify the work for tradespeople, not only in solar technology but across various tasks such as plumbing, carpentry, photovoltaic installations, and electrical services.

The software aids in initial customer interactions, project management on-site, and the final steps of invoicing and payments, boasting 20,000 users in the DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) region.

While platforms like Jobber (which amassed $183.5 million) and ServiceTitan (with $1.5 billion in funding) are recognized as essential tools for trade business in some regions, the market in Europe remains largely untapped, though it is beginning to show signs of growth. For instance, German-based Plancraft recently secured €12 million in Series A funding.

In the DACH area, HERO is celebrated as a key digital platform for SME tradespeople, receiving its latest funding round support primarily from Eight Roads Ventures, with Cusp Capital also contributing again.

“Eight Roads has been part of many Vertical SaaS success stories, and HERO impresses with its comprehensive service and skilled team. We are confident that vertical SaaS solutions will digitalize and enrich industries sustainably,” Lucile Cornet, a partner at Eight Roads Ventures, commented.

With objectives to venture into Poland, France, and the Netherlands, HERO identifies substantial potential for technological growth in these markets, with France lagging slightly behind Germany, according to Kessler. Germany, along with the Nordics and the U.K., leads in technology adoption across Europe.
