Concerns surrounding autonomous vehicles have intensified in the Austin, Texas neighbourhood of Mueller Lake following the tragic death of a duck. This incident, which involved an Avride autonomous vehicle—operated in self-driving mode with a safety driver present—has sparked outrage among local residents, particularly after a post in a neighbourhood Facebook group described how the car “steamrolled through” without slowing down or stopping.

Adding to the emotional weight, the duck was reportedly well-known to locals, having nested near a popular Italian restaurant. In response to concerns about the duck’s unhatched eggs, community members have stepped in to safeguard them by placing them in an incubator.

An Avride spokesperson confirmed the vehicle was indeed operating autonomously at the time of the incident but clarified that the company has not halted public testing. Instead, it has adjusted its operational boundaries by avoiding specific roads adjacent to the lake where the unfortunate event occurred.

The post that ignited the uproar also claimed the vehicle disregarded a stop sign. However, Avride disputed this, asserting that their data showed the vehicle had complied with all necessary stops throughout its journey. They have conducted a thorough review of the incident, including multiple simulations of the event, and are now contemplating technological improvements based on these findings.

Avride is not alone in its venture; other companies like Zoox, Tesla, and Waymo are also testing or operating autonomous vehicle services in Austin. Despite the negative press surrounding the duck incident, the advancement and testing of autonomous vehicle technology continue in the city, underlining the ongoing debate over the integration of such innovations into everyday environments and the responsibility of developers to ensure safety—in this case, for both humans and animals alike.
