Recraft, a Silicon Valley-based startup known for its innovative image model that outperformed OpenAI’s DALL-E and Midjourney in a notable industry benchmark, has successfully secured $30 million in a Series B funding round led by Accel, as reported by TechCrunch. The round also saw investments from Khosla Ventures and Madrona, building on Recraft’s previous fundraising efforts, which included a $12 million Series A led by Khosla in 2024. The startup now boasts an annual recurring revenue (ARR) exceeding $5 million and a user base of over 4 million.
Recraft gained significant recognition in the tech industry when its image generation model, referred to by the codename “red_panda,” took the lead in the Artificial Analysis benchmark last year. This specific iteration, V3, was named after the frequent requests for images of the adorable animal. According to founder and CEO Anna Veronika Dorogush, Recraft is committed to developing its models from the ground up, competing against notable players like Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and Stable Diffusion. The unique strength of Recraft’s AI lies in its capability to produce branded images seamlessly, allowing companies to integrate logos or marketing materials effortlessly while adhering to their branding standards—an area where existing solutions often stumble.
This expertise positions Recraft as a noteworthy alternative to design platforms like Canva, which also offers AI tools for branding. Moreover, the company stands out for being led by a female founder, with Dorogush having a rich background in machine learning garnered from her tenure at Yandex, the Russian equivalent of Google, along with experience at Google and Microsoft.
Before transitioning to AI, Dorogush worked as a professional model while studying math and computer science at a prestigious university in Russia. This experience imparted crucial lessons about the nature of hard work in the business world, teaching her that dedication alone is insufficient for success.
Reflecting on her journey, Dorogush stated, “The biggest lesson from that time was that grinding isn’t everything. Now when building a company, I know that to succeed, we have to be excellent at what’s mission-critical. In our case, building models is very important. So we have put all the effort into excelling at this.”
