On Tuesday, Meta revealed plans to host its inaugural developer conference focused entirely on generative AI.
Named LlamaCon, after Meta’s Llama suite of generative AI models, the event is set for April 29. The company stated that it will present “the latest advancements in [its] open-source AI projects to assist developers in crafting outstanding applications and products.”
Meta will share further information shortly. Additionally, their annual developer gathering, Meta Connect, is planned for September, adhering to its usual scheduling.
Several years ago, Meta adopted an “open” strategy for its AI technology development to cultivate a diverse ecosystem of apps and platforms. However, the company reportedly found itself taken aback by the emergence of Chinese AI competitor DeepSeek, which successfully launched “open” AI solutions that rival Meta’s offerings.
According to reports, Meta suspects that DeepSeek’s latest model might surpass the upcoming version of Llama, expected to be unveiled shortly. To address this challenge, Meta has established specialized teams to analyze how DeepSeek has managed to reduce the operational and deployment costs of its models, intending to integrate those insights into Llama’s ongoing development.
The company recently announced a plan to invest up to $80 billion in AI-related initiatives this year, encompassing new hires in AI and the establishment of additional AI data centers.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously indicated that multiple Llama models are slated for release in the upcoming months, featuring “reasoning” capabilities akin to OpenAI’s o3-mini and models designed with integrated multimodal functionalities.
Despite claiming that its Llama models have amassed hundreds of millions of downloads, Meta faces legal challenges, including accusations of training its models on copyrighted books without authorization. Furthermore, several EU nations have compelled the company to delay or even cancel its model launches due to concerns surrounding data privacy.
