Google has introduced an innovative feature in its Gemini AI chatbot that allows it to customize responses based on earlier conversations. The announcement was made in a blog post released on Thursday. Gemini can now summarize past discussions or recall information provided in previous chats.
This functionality means users won’t need to repeat details they have previously shared with Gemini, nor will they have to sift through older threads to find specific information.
Starting today, Gemini’s conversation recall feature is being rolled out to English-speaking subscribers of Google’s $20-per-month AI chatbot service, Google One AI Premium. Google also plans to expand this feature to additional languages and enterprise users in the weeks to come.
The primary goal of this feature is to enhance the fluidity and personalization of the Gemini chatbot. However, some users may be concerned about the implications of the platform storing their past interactions.
To mitigate privacy issues, Google offers users the ability to review, delete, or manage how long their chat history is retained. Users can completely disable the recall feature by visiting the “My Activity” page within Gemini. Google also emphasizes that it does not use user conversation histories to train its AI models.
Nevertheless, several AI chatbot developers are actively exploring memory and recall capabilities.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously mentioned that enhanced memory is one of the most sought-after features for ChatGPT.
Both Google and OpenAI have implemented broader “memory” functionalities in their AI chatbots over the past year, allowing ChatGPT and Gemini to remember user-specific information, such as preferred names, food preferences, or the choice to ride a bike over driving.
However, it’s important to note that these memory features do not automatically save or recall entire chat histories by default.
