Customers of Uber Eats in Jersey City can now receive their food orders through Avride’s autonomous delivery robots.
This recent launch in New Jersey marks Uber’s continued exploration into autonomous technology, deepening its collaboration with Avride. Currently, the ride-hailing and food delivery titan has deployed autonomous vehicles (AVs) in 11 cities in partnership with six different companies, including Cartken, Coco, Nuro, and Serve Robotics. The company is also preparing to incorporate Waymo’s robotaxis into its platform in Austin and Atlanta by early 2025.
Initially revealed in October 2024, Uber’s partnership with Avride aims to integrate the company’s delivery robots and autonomous vehicles into the Uber ecosystem. Following this announcement, the two partners successfully started robotic deliveries in Austin and Dallas.
Plans are also in the works for Avride to launch its self-driving cars in Dallas later this year, marking its first deployment of robotaxis in the U.S. Avride originated from Yandex, a Russian tech firm that restructured its operations following the country’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Recently, the startup has joined forces with Grubhub to introduce delivery robots on university campuses nationwide, starting with 100 units at Ohio State University.
The selection of Jersey City as a testing ground presents unique challenges, particularly in February when inclement weather can complicate deliveries for the small robots.
Avride reports that its delivery robots are capable of operating in snowy conditions and during “moderate precipitation.” A company representative mentioned that while the robots can reach speeds of up to 5 miles per hour and travel 31 miles on a single charge, their ideal delivery range is one to two miles.
Avride will manage deliveries within a one-square-mile zone of downtown Jersey City, spanning from Hamilton Park to Historic Downtown and the Waterfront, with future expansion plans. However, Avride has not disclosed the number of robots that will be deployed initially in Jersey City.
A selection of restaurants will be involved, including the Michelin-starred Jiangnan, Rumi Turkish Grill, and Gulp. Customers using the Uber Eats app can choose whether they want their meals delivered by a traditional courier or an Avride robot.

Customers will also be able to monitor the robot’s progress via the Uber Eats app. Once the robot arrives, users will receive a notification and can unlock it through the app to collect their food.
In a recent fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that he views 2024 as a pivotal year for the AV sector, which he believes could yield a trillion-dollar market in the U.S. alone.
However, he cautioned that realizing commercial AV deployment will require time due to various hurdles, such as the high expense of equipping vehicles with necessary sensors, a complex regulatory landscape, unpredictable seasonal demand, and the imperative to achieve levels of safety that exceed human capabilities.
