Apple Introduces Heart Rate Monitoring Feature in Powerbeats Pro 2

by admin

On Tuesday, Apple unveiled the eagerly awaited Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds, nearly six years after the first generation launched. The latest model features the signature ear hook design suitable for workouts, enhanced sound quality, extended battery life, and a wireless charging case.

These earbuds represent a significant advancement in Apple’s initiative to enhance health care capabilities, introducing built-in heart rate monitoring. This feature activates during exercise, providing users with real-time data through LED optical sensors.

In addition to being compatible with Apple’s health application, the heart rate monitoring feature supports multiple popular fitness apps, such as Open, Peloton, Runna, Slopes, Ladder, Nike Run Club, and YaoYao. However, the widely used running app Strava is notably absent from this compatibility list.

The launch of Powerbeats extends Apple’s health offerings, which currently center predominantly around the Apple Watch. Initially featuring basic functions like step tracking, Apple has enhanced its capabilities to include ECG readings, fall detection, sleep monitoring, and a host of additional health-related features.

In 2024, Apple broadened its health toolkit with a hearing aid feature for the AirPods Pro 2. The integration of heart rate monitoring in the Beats lineup may indicate a possible inclusion in future AirPods updates; however, this would require significant hardware enhancements.

Unlike the more fitness-oriented Powerbeats, Apple’s other headphone offerings tend to appeal to a broader lifestyle demographic.

The latest headphones have transitioned from Apple’s W2 chip to the new H2 chip, first introduced with the AirPods Pro 2 in 2022. This chip remains Apple’s premier headphone chip until the anticipated AirPods Pro 3 are released.

According to Apple, the advancements in battery life are attributed to their proprietary silicon, with the earbuds delivering a remarkable 10 hours of playback—up from nine hours in the previous model. The new charging case has also significantly boosted total battery life from 24 to 45 hours, all while reducing the size of the notoriously bulky original Powerbeats Pro case.

Additionally, Apple highlights enhancements in audio quality through the implementation of Spatial Audio featuring head tracking, akin to the noise-canceling technology found in the AirPods Pro 2, along with Adaptive EQ that fine-tunes sound according to the user’s ear shape.

The iconic ear hooks have been reengineered using nickel alloy for greater durability, and the overall weight of the earbuds has decreased by 20%.

Apple conducted tests with 1,000 athletes to ensure a more universally comfortable fit for the new headphones, which also boast an IPX4 rating for sweat resistance—similar to that found in AirPods. The updated design swaps out the previous Lightning charging port for a USB-C connection while still offering wireless charging capabilities.

Beginning today, the Powerbeats Pro 2 are available for purchase online at a price of $250—maintaining the same cost as their predecessors back in 2019. They will be found in stores starting Thursday, February 13.

Though Apple’s announcement just narrowly missed the Super Bowl, the company is actively investing in a sizable advertising campaign featuring endorsements from renowned athletes such as LeBron James, Lionel Messi, and Shohei Ohtani.
