Meta’s Threads is intensifying its focus on custom feed support as it encounters competition from the expanding social platform Bluesky, which has now amassed over 30 million users and emphasizes custom feeds as a significant feature. On Tuesday, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared that users can now publicize their custom feeds and explore those created by others.
Meta believes its custom feeds stand out because anyone can create them without needing technical expertise. With the introduction of public feeds, users can now leverage feeds crafted by others and have the option to pin them to their home screens.
This launch aims to further compete with Bluesky, which popularized the customization of feeds as part of its social platform, serving as an alternative to X.
Bluesky has largely gained traction among users migrating from X seeking a similar experience. It has retained its early user base by offering a range of tools for network personalization, particularly custom feeds that can be created by both Bluesky’s team and external developers, allowing for varied perspectives on the platform rather than relying solely on the default algorithmic feed, known as “Discover.”
As Bluesky expanded, Threads responded to user demands for enhanced personalization by launching its custom feeds feature to global users last November. This rollout followed closely on the heels of Zuckerberg’s announcement about the feature undergoing testing, highlighting Meta’s swift response to curb Bluesky’s growth.
To create custom feeds on Threads, users first search for relevant topics to view the latest posts and then tap the three-dot menu, selecting “Create New Feed.” Additionally, users can personalize feeds by adding specific profiles; simply tap on the three-dot icon above any user’s profile picture and add them to the desired feed.

To make custom feeds public, users need to tap and hold the feed, then select “Edit Feeds.” From there, they can switch their feed to “Public.”
Threads also enables users to share their public feeds with others via a link or direct message by selecting “View Feed” from the Edit Feeds settings. Users can then post a preview of their custom feed using the quote icon and utilize the “Share Feed” button to distribute the feed to others.
Custom feeds will be accessible under a newly introduced “Feeds” tab on profiles.

Since its debut, Threads users have been generating custom feeds centered around various interests including sports, literature, art, astronomy, fashion, poetry, design, and more.
However, in contrast to Bluesky, the custom feeds on Threads are primarily focused on user interests. Bluesky, on the other hand, offers a broader approach where feeds can be interest-based or utilized for various methods of content sorting and filtering. For example, Bluesky provides feeds that showcase trending topics within a user’s network, those that help users revisit missed content, and specialized feeds concentrated solely on video content, among other options.
