Chris Young, who headed Microsoft’s business development and venture division, announced his resignation on Wednesday, as confirmed by the company.
As the leader of Microsoft’s M12 venture fund, Young held the position of a named officer. Other notable named officers at Microsoft include CFO Amy Hood, Vice Chair and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith, head of sales Judson Althoff, and CEO and Chairman Satya Nadella.
Due to his status as a named officer, Microsoft was required to disclose details regarding Young’s compensation, responsibilities, and his exit. On Wednesday, the company reported Young’s resignation via an SEC filing.
In the annual proxy report filed in October, Microsoft highlighted Young’s achievements, which included enhancing M12’s “engagements” in AI and data infrastructure, collaborating with company leaders in new technologies, securing a strategic partnership, and promoting the company’s sustainability objectives. The report also noted Young’s active promotion of diversity and inclusion within the business development sector and throughout the company.
Previously the CEO of McAfee, Young joined Microsoft in 2020, succeeding Peggy Johnson, the founder of M12. The fund was initially established by Microsoft to monitor emerging technology and startups in Silicon Valley through traditional venture investments. Under Young’s guidance, M12 evolved into a more integrated arm of Microsoft’s business development initiatives.
The SEC filing did not elaborate on the reasons behind Young’s departure, but it stated that he would remain an employee until March to help facilitate a smooth transition, albeit not in his prior role. Young has not yet responded to requests for comments.
“We sincerely appreciate Chris’s substantial contributions to Microsoft during the last four years,” a company spokesperson shared with TechCrunch. “Throughout Chris’ tenure, he guided numerous strategic partnerships, nurtured a culture of innovation, and established a foundation for our future growth. We respect Chris’ decision to explore new opportunities.”
