Former Autodesk Executives Secure $46 Million to Develop the Future of Architectural Design

by admin

Many architects will affirm that Autodesk’s software, such as AutoCAD and Revit, has been crucial to their practice for many years.

However, despite their prevalent usage, Amar Hanspal, the former co-CEO and chief product officer of Autodesk, asserts that the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector still relies on outdated tools that belong to the 20th century while designing modern buildings. His new venture, Motif, described by Hanspal as a “next-generation design platform for buildings,” aims to address this issue. The startup has successfully raised $46 million to support its mission.

Hanspal approaches this challenge after a long career in AEC technology, having spent around two decades at Autodesk before co-founding Bright Machines, a manufacturing automation firm in 2018. Following a significant funding round for Bright Machines, he departed after six years, eager for his next endeavor.

During his investigations into the AEC industry, Hanspal discovered widespread dissatisfaction among architects concerning the prevailing software, which is primarily non-cloud-based and can take as much as 45 minutes to process even minor changes.

In 2023, Hanspal partnered with Brian Mathews, a former product CTO at Autodesk, to launch Motif.

Although Motif’s initial product isn’t expected to launch until the first half of this year, Hanspal provided a glimpse of its direction, stating that the platform will feature a suite of cloud-native 3D computer-aided design tools infused with machine learning and AI capabilities.

The $46 million raised by Motif consists of both seed and Series A financing, led by CapitalG, Alphabet’s growth fund, with Redpoint Ventures spearheading the seed round.

Jill Chase, a partner at CapitalG, mentioned to TechCrunch that prior to meeting with Motif, she had conducted her own research into architecture software, identifying it as a vast market filled with outdated offerings.

She questioned why the existing tools had not yet been disrupted and found that transitioning 3D architectural models into the cloud presents considerable technical challenges.

Beyond the engineering hurdles, selling these tools is reportedly complex as well. Chase explained, “Establishing trust and building relationships with large architectural firms is essential for gaining entry into the market.”

Upon meeting Hanspal and Mathews, she recognized their combined 40 years of expertise in the AEC software domain would give them an advantage in challenging established players.

Regarding the delay in launching their first product, Hanspal likened Motif’s approach to that of design platform Figma, which remained in stealth mode for three years before unveiling anything.

“This is a vast and ambitious undertaking that we are fully aware will demand significant effort to realize,” Hanspal remarked.

Motif is not the only player aiming to innovate AEC software; other startups in this space include Snaptrude and Arcol.

Nevertheless, Hanspal is confident that Motif possesses the strongest potential to succeed in this competitive landscape.

“It truly necessitates a unique team willing to put in the hard work,” he stated. “I believe that’s who we are.”
