DeepSeek Tops the Charts on the US Play Store

by admin

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI laboratory, has swiftly ascended to the top of the Google Play Store with its Android application, achieving this milestone just days after its chatbot application secured the leading position on the Apple App Store.

As reported by app analytics company AppFigures, since its debut in mid-January, the DeepSeek app has garnered over 1.2 million downloads on the Play Store and more than 1.9 million on the App Store globally. It’s important to note that the real number of installations could be even higher, as DeepSeek’s listing indicates over 5 million downloads on the Play Store.

The swift ascent of DeepSeek in app rankings comes in the wake of a surge in interest attributed to the launch of various open-source AI models that stand strong against leading offerings from Western AI giants such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google.

The Chinese firm asserts that its AI models were developed at a fraction of the cost compared to those from entities like OpenAI and Meta, utilizing significantly less advanced AI hardware.

DeepSeek’s application serves as an alternative to ChatGPT, leveraging the lab’s V3 model. Users can utilize the bot for tasks such as file analysis, question answering, and information retrieval from the internet. The application is available for free, allowing file uploads and synchronization of chat histories across different devices.

While DeepSeek currently dominates the app charts, it will need to reach 300 million weekly users to claim a sustainable lead over OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the chatbot market.

In recent days, both DeepSeek and its array of models have attracted significant industry attention. Startups such as Perplexity and Gloo—founded by former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger—are already incorporating DeepSeek’s technologies into their services.
