Threads Introduces ‘Media’ Tab and Photo Tagging Feature

by admin

On Thursday, Meta’s latest social media platform, Threads, unveiled a new “media” tab for sharing photos and videos, just days after competitors like X and the emerging platform Bluesky introduced similar features for video content. Additionally, users will now have the option to tag individuals in their shared photos.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, stated in a Threads post that the new media tab will enable users to easily view all photos and videos shared by others on the platform. He emphasized that this feature was a “long overdue request from the community.”

This update could strengthen Threads’ position in the competitive landscape against video-centric applications, particularly TikTok, which is currently experiencing a temporary pause on its U.S. ban.

The rollout of these features is taking place globally, alongside a new “markup” function introduced last week that enables users to share their perspectives on others’ posts.

The announcement follows Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent declaration that Threads has reached 320 million monthly active users (MAUs), a rise from 300 million in the previous month.

This increase is noteworthy, particularly as Bluesky faces a deceleration in its growth, having expanded by less than 10% month-over-month in December 2024, a stark contrast to its impressive 189% growth in November, according to market analytics provider Similarweb. While Bluesky’s peak growth may be behind it, the platform continues to grow.

To draw more users to Threads, Meta has consistently introduced new features, including a scheduling tool for posts, the ability to follow accounts from other federated platforms, customizable feeds, AI-generated summaries for trending discussions, and additional enhancements.
