Independent bookstore supporter Bookshop.org unveiled its new e-book platform on Tuesday, providing readers with a way to purchase e-books without enriching Jeff Bezos. For years, Amazon’s significant influence and grip on the publishing sector has led authors and booksellers to accuse the giant of monopolistic practices.
Amazon reigns supreme in the e-book market largely due to its Kindle, among the top e-readers available today. While discerning consumers may look at alternatives like Kobo for their devices, there often remain limited opportunities to purchase e-books directly from publishers and independent sellers, nudging readers to turn to the likes of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other large retail chains.
In response, Bookshop.org and Libro.fm have stepped in as viable alternatives to Amazon, sharing a portion of their earnings with independent bookstores across the United States. However, for e-book enthusiasts, acquiring new titles outside Amazon’s realm has been a significant hurdle. Bookshop.org’s venture into e-books offers consumers a long-awaited opportunity to purchase digital titles while also supporting local businesses.
“When we started Bookshop.org, our aim was to assist local bookstores in their struggle against Amazon and similar online competitors,” stated Andy Hunter, the founder and CEO of Bookshop.org, during the announcement regarding their new service features. “This launch signifies our dedication to ensuring that bookstores continue to thrive.”
Currently, e-books from Bookshop.org are accessible solely via web browsers or through the Bookshop.org apps, which can be downloaded on Android and iOS devices.
To enhance its market influence, however, Bookshop.org will need to provide options for downloading e-books to popular e-readers like the Kindle.
“Bookshop’s foray into e-books is not an instant remedy. Amazon has held a monopoly over the e-book industry for far too long for it to be,” commented book critic Maris Kreizman on Bluesky. “Yet, it’s a significant first step, and that’s something worth celebrating.”
