Update: Reports from social media indicate that the changelog has been revised to exclude any mention of Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental. This change has also been observed by this reporter. A representative from Google confirmed to TechCrunch that an “outdated release note” had been “published by mistake.” The original article continues:
Google has chosen a subtle approach for the unveiling of its next-generation flagship AI model, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental. Rather than a grand announcement, the company disclosed the new model in a changelog associated with its Gemini chatbot application.
The introduction of Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental, which follows the Gemini 1.5 Pro model launched by Google in February, arrives as the tech industry remains captivated by the capabilities of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup. DeepSeek’s latest models are openly accessible for download, showcasing performance that rivals or surpasses many other leading models developed by U.S. tech corporations and AI firms. This has triggered significant discussions in Silicon Valley and among U.S. government officials.
According to Google, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental, available to Gemini Advanced users starting Thursday, is now the flagship model within the Gemini AI family. The company asserts that this model will deliver “improved factuality” along with enhanced performance for coding and mathematical tasks.

“Whether you are addressing sophisticated coding challenges, such as creating a specific program from scratch, or tackling mathematical problems like formulating intricate statistical models or quantum algorithms, 2.0 Pro Experimental will assist you in navigating even the most difficult tasks with enhanced precision and ease,” states Google in the changelog.
Gemini Advanced is a component of Google’s paid plan, Google One AI Premium, and is also accessible through add-ons for Google Workspace.
Google emphasizes that Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental is currently in an “early preview” stage and may exhibit “unexpected behaviors,” including potential errors. Unlike other Gemini models available within the app, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental does not have access to real-time data and is incompatible with some features of the application.
“Our philosophy centers on rapid iteration and providing the best of Gemini to our users. We want to ensure that subscribers to Gemini Advanced have prioritized access to our latest AI advancements,” Google elaborated in the changelog. “Your input is invaluable for improving these models over time, and insights gained from experimental launches play a crucial role in shaping our broader model releases.”
In conjunction with the release of Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental, Google has also introduced the Gemini 2.0 Flash model, initially announced in December, to the Gemini app for all users. This model will remain the default offering within the app for the foreseeable future.
