Looking Beyond Meta: Open Source Alternatives to Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp Secure Funding on Kickstarter

by admin

The creator of Pixelfed, Loops, and Sup, which are open source substitutes for Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp respectively, is currently seeking financial support on Kickstarter to enhance the development of these applications.

These applications are part of the expanding open social web, commonly referred to as the fediverse, which operates on the ActivityPub protocol employed by the X alternative, Mastodon. Following the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk in October 2022, Mastodon experienced a surge in registrations and usage during the subsequent migration of users away from X after the U.S. presidential election.

In the subsequent months and years post-acquisition, decentralized and open-source platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky (utilizing the newer AT Protocol) have continued to grow in user numbers, as more individuals searched for alternatives to centralized social media platforms dominated by billionaires such as Musk and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg.

Recognizing this trend, even Meta has understood the necessity of entering the fediverse. In 2023, the company launched its own competitor called Instagram Threads, which is currently in the process of integrating ActivityPub.

Currently, Daniel Supernault, the Canadian developer behind these federated applications challenging the Meta social media dominance, is raising funds for ongoing enhancement and maintenance of his open social communities.

“Support us in shifting control back to the users!” he expressed in a post shared on Mastodon announcing the launch of the Kickstarter campaign on Thursday.

At the time of writing, the campaign has accrued $58,383. While it has already surpassed its initial goal, Supernault aims to raise $1 million or more to assemble a small team.

Supernault aspires for his suite of applications to be the first within the fediverse to amass a billion users, although significant progress needs to be made before achieving that ambition. While Pixelfed has existed for several years, it just recently launched the 1.0 version of its mobile application. Loops is still undergoing alpha testing on Apple’s TestFlight. Furthermore, Sup is yet to be released but is anticipated to launch soon, according to its Instagram account.

Both Loops and Sup will be available to backers on Kickstarter.

A fourth initiative, PubKit, is also part of this endeavor, providing a toolset to assist developers working in the fediverse.

This includes a series of interactive tools and testing frameworks, which enable developers to simulate common activities within their service, create an inbox for real-time activity monitoring and debugging, and tools for inspecting, debugging, and validating HTTP Signature implementations.

This marks the first occasion that Supernault has turned to Kickstarter for assistance in these initiatives aimed at benefiting the Pixelfed Foundation.

The ultimate goal of the Kickstarter campaign is to register the Pixelfed Foundation as a nonprofit organization, expanding its team beyond volunteer efforts. This would address concerns regarding Supernault as a potential single point of failure for the project, a situation that has prompted worries given recent concerns over behavior.

Earlier this month, Mastodon’s CEO, Eugen Rochko, made a similar move towards establishing a nonprofit structure.

If the campaign proves successful, it will also pave the way for the development of a blogging application intended as an alternative to Tumblr or LiveJournal in the future.

Additionally, the funds will assist the apps in managing the recent surge in new users. As of now, Pixelfed.social, the principal Pixelfed server (similar to Mastodon, where anyone can operate a Pixelfed instance), has surpassed 200,000 users, buoyed by the mobile app’s launch, according to information shared with TechCrunch. The server now ranks as the second-largest within the fediverse, trailing only behind Mastodon.social, based on network data from FediDB.

The newly acquired funding will enable the expansion of storage, CDN, and computational resources required to support the growing user community and expedite development. Furthermore, it will allow Supernault to devote more time to the apps and the fediverse at large, while concurrently enhancing moderation, security, privacy, and safety measures that social applications necessitate.

As part of these initiatives, Supernault also aims to implement end-to-end encryption throughout the fediverse.
