Bluesky, the emerging social network, is making significant strides in video content. Following the recent introduction of a TikTok-inspired video feed amid the temporary halt of the popular app in the U.S., the platform has on Monday revealed that it will be launching a dedicated video tab on user profiles.
This new tab will enable users to display videos they’ve uploaded on Bluesky, whether they’re original creations or clips sourced from other platforms, including TikTok. Beyond merely tapping into the potential for increased video engagement, this feature could also open up new revenue avenues for Bluesky. The company might introduce premium options, allowing users to pay for extended or higher-quality video uploads as part of an upcoming subscription service.
Despite these developments, not all users are enthusiastic about Bluesky morphing into a competitor for TikTok. Some users have expressed concerns, questioning whether they will have the option to disable the new tab on their profiles. Others are advocating for the introduction of features they currently enjoy on X, such as an Edit button.
Nonetheless, there is undeniable interest from developers in creating video-centric applications for Bluesky.
A number of developers are actively working on apps that could be described as “Bluesky TikTok” alternatives, including Berlin-based developer Sebastian Vogelsang, known for creating the Bluesky apps Skeets and now Flashes (akin to a “Bluesky Instagram”). Other teams are also developing forthcoming apps such as Reelo and Skylight.
Recently, notable investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban has even expressed interest in supporting a video app built on the AT Protocol, which underpins Bluesky.
The newly added video tab for user profiles was part of the Bluesky 1.97 update, which also included a menu for blocking users and deleting conversations after reporting direct messages, along with various translation enhancements.
