Hyperline Raises $10 Million to Advance Its Automated Billing Solution

by admin

The French startup Hyperline aims to create the next evolution of Chargebee. Over the last couple of years, the company has developed a billing platform capable of handling recurring subscriptions, one-time purchases, usage-based billing, and more.

In 2023, Hyperline secured an initial funding round of €4 million (approximately $4.1 million at current exchange rates) from Index Ventures. Now, Index Ventures is reinforcing its investment with an additional $10 million infusion into the startup.

Although billing may appear simple, it turns into a complex challenge as businesses scale. Founder and CEO Lucas Bédout remarked to TechCrunch, “The labor-intensive aspect comes from daily operations. As soon as you exceed 200 or 300 customers, someone must verify that everything is accurate.”

Issues such as incorrect pricing, overlooked items in invoices, requests for partial refunds, and recurrent automatic payment failures crop up frequently.

“Initially, we aimed to improve on existing solutions like Chargebee by a small margin. However, with the rapid changes in the industry, we’ve realized it’s not just about marginal improvements; it’s about offering a distinctly different solution. Today, customers seek automation—they no longer want to manage invoices, reminders, and quotes manually,” Bédout explained.

In addition to managing subscriptions, Hyperline incorporates various pricing models. Clients can instantly set custom pricing or implement usage-based components, allowing customers to pay based on their consumption. Hyperline also directly manages the invoicing process.

When it comes to payments, Hyperline doesn’t handle transactions directly; instead, it facilitates that process for its users. “We manage the entire value chain, except for the payment processing. Yet, we offer a unique approach: we act as an orchestrator. Our clients do not interact with payment processors directly,” Bédout noted.

Hyperline simplifies interactions with multiple payment providers by centralizing the experience, making it convenient to work with various processors based on payment methods or geographical locations.

Users typically get started via the web interface, linking Hyperline to their CRM, which enables sales teams to generate quotes directly. They can also integrate the platform with accounting software to handle invoicing and payment reconciliation.

Additionally, Hyperline offers an API, making it particularly valuable for synchronizing events directly from a data warehouse for usage-based billing.

Currently, Hyperline employs 14 individuals, but the startup anticipates expanding its team to 25 employees soon. Notable clients include Lokki, Malou, ScorePlay, Gladia, and Formance.

“Most of our current clients generate between €3 and €10 million in revenue,” Bédout stated. However, Hyperline is confident that it can cater to larger companies that manage a significant number of invoices, which will involve partnerships with integration firms—a strategy Hyperline is already exploring.
