The value of a console hinges on its game offerings. Although Nintendo has not yet disclosed specific specifications for the anticipated Switch 2, the gaming titan did unveil what seems to be the inaugural game confirmed for its hybrid system: a fresh rendition of the iconic racing game, Mario Kart.
A successful Nintendo launch wouldn’t be complete without a familiar character making an appearance. However, similar to the hardware details, game specifics remain scarce. The trailer revealed basic gameplay elements that will feel instantly recognizable to anyone who has enjoyed any iteration of the franchise over the past three decades.
If the launch is set for later this year, it would come five years after the debut of Mario Kart Live for its predecessor. This would mark the 16th main installment in the franchise, which originally started on the Super Nintendo back in 1992.
The original Switch launched in 2017, featuring The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as its flagship title. This open-world Zelda adventure, much like the Switch itself, earned overwhelming acclaim from critics. A sequel titled The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released in 2023 to widespread adulation.
It appears the Switch 2 shares numerous similarities with its predecessor, which has achieved approximately 150 million units sold since its release. We also know that this new hybrid console will offer backward compatibility with the existing Switch game library.
For those eager to learn more about the new platform, the next opportunity will be on April 2, when Nintendo airs its first Direct presentation dedicated to the upcoming console.
