On Thursday, Snap unveiled its latest initiative, the “Challenge Tags” rewards program designed for AR developers, offering cash prizes for innovative Lens submissions. Additionally, the company introduced special educational pricing and a student discount for its developer-centric AR glasses, Spectacles.
The inaugural Challenge Tag centers around the theme of humor and will be open for submissions until January 31. The creator of the top Lens will receive a reward of $2,500, while the second and third place submissions will earn $1,500 and $1,000, respectively. Furthermore, twenty honorable mentions will each gain $250.
To take part, developers must sign up for each challenge, create a Lens using Snap’s Lens Studio, and apply the Challenge Tag during the publishing process to be eligible. Snap plans to introduce new challenges each month.
Lenses that compete for prizes will be evaluated based on their originality, technical quality, and adherence to the theme. Thanks to a new partnership with the AR marketing platform Lenslist, AR developers from over 100 countries are invited to participate.
Regarding the new educational pricing and student discounts for Spectacles, individuals enrolled or working at accredited colleges and universities can obtain a pair for just $49.50 or €55 per month, compared to the regular subscription fee of $99 monthly.
The educational discounts and pricing are available in all countries where Spectacles can be purchased, including the U.S., France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands. Any student or faculty member associated with an accredited educational institution within these regions qualifies for this offer.
