SparkLabs, a renowned venture capital firm in the early-stage sector, has gained significant attention for its investments in OpenAI and a variety of AI startups like Vectara, Allganize, Kneron, Anthropic, xAI, Glade (YC S23), and Lucidya AI. The firm is now poised to intensify its investments in the AI arena. SparkLabs disclosed on Tuesday that it had secured a fresh $50 million fund, the AIM AI Fund, aimed at supporting AI startups both from its AIM-X accelerator in Saudi Arabia and globally.
The unveiling of SparkLabs’ fresh investment fund and its broadened investment scope highlights the significant developments within the artificial intelligence sector, especially generative AI. This area has witnessed a rapid increase in startups, alongside a flurry of investment activities as investors search for the next Open AI or a promising startup that might be acquired by larger entities keen on enhancing their AI capabilities.
This development also illustrates the expanding geography of AI innovation beyond the confines of Silicon Valley. SparkLabs initiated the AIM-X, an AI startup accelerator, earlier this year in Saudi Arabia as part of a national initiative towards advancing AI technology within the next half-decade.
Globally, the AI startup scene has blossomed, with over 210 unicorns, each valued at $1 billion or more, surfacing by March 2024 according to the Edge Delta report. However, the United States still leads in the creation of AI startups, with a total of 4,633 firms launched between 2013 and 2022, as reported by the same source.
Approximately 35% of this new fund from SparkLabs will be allocated to accelerator participants, while the remaining 65% will be directed towards Series A and Series B investments outside Saudi Arabia. Bernard Moon, co-founder and CEO of SparkLabs, shared this distribution detail.
Moon added, “The accelerator will predominantly focus on investments in Saudi Arabia or the MENA region, about 10%-20%. However, the vast majority will target the best AI startups, regardless of their location, primarily in the U.S.”
The average funding amount for accelerator participants is set at $200,000, with the potential to reach up to $500,000 in exceptional cases as per Moon’s conversation with TechCrunch. For Series A and Series B investments, the amounts will range between $1 million to $5 million. The aim is to invest in 50 to 70 companies through this fund.
SparkLabs withheld the identities of its limited partners, although Moon mentioned that they include a government-backed fund of funds.
The inaugural batch of investments from the AI fund will be announced at the GAIN Summit (Global AI Summit) in Riyadh next Tuesday, September 10. In an exclusive reveal to TechCrunch, Moon stated that SparkLabs has already invested in 14 startups through the AI fund:
