Joshua Lu, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, has traversed the evolving landscape of the video game sector, from his days at Zynga during the apex of mobile gaming with blockbusters like Words with Friends to his executive role at Blizzard Entertainment producing major titles such as Diablo Immortal, and onto exploring virtual reality in gaming at Meta with Horizon Worlds.
Lu shared with TechCrunch, “I had to discard old certainties and adopt entirely new approaches.”
Eager to be at the forefront of gaming’s next evolution, Lu joined the investment firm in 2022 and contributed to the inception of Speedrun accelerator. This initiative backs around 40 gaming startups bi-annually with investments of $750,000 each. As they embark on their third cohort and welcome applications for the fourth, Lu has witnessed the transformative impact of AI and innovative distribution channels on the sector.
Notably, half of the accelerator’s current participants are AI ventures, engaging in activities ranging from AI-generated narratives to the creation of 3D avatars via artificial intelligence. Lu reflected on his time at Blizzard, stating, “The last project I was part of required six years and a $250 million budget to complete,” referring to Diablo Immortal. “Imagine if we could achieve the same high-quality output with just a fraction of the budget and workforce.”
The prospect of AI reducing the demand for high-salary developer roles at major gaming studios may be contentious. However, the potential for AI to enable a multitude of startups to be formed and compete on quality is a fascinating consideration.
Lu highlighted the innovative approach of Clementine, an enterprise that participated in Speedrun, which offered a demo tasking players with unraveling a mystery by interacting with AI without revealing their human identity. This concept could be viewed with alarm or amusement, depending on one’s perspective on AI’s potential risks. Additionally, he spotlighted Echo Chunk, which secured $1.4 million in funding through Speedrun’s guidance. Echo Chunk achieved viral success with Echo Chess, a game featuring AI-created endless levels, showcasing the early yet promising explorations into novel gameplay designs and dynamics facilitated by AI.
Moreover, Lu is promoting the idea of developing games on Discord, highlighting its recent developer-friendly update that allows the creation of in-app games. Throughout his career, he has observed the narrowing avenues for game discovery; for instance, the decline of game discoveries via social media feeds, reminiscent of Farmville’s viral success. “Where do we look for new platforms that can host genuinely social games and their distribution?” Lu pondered.
Several entrants to the accelerator have focused on creating within Discord, with others pivoting to this strategy during the 12-week program. “With an increasing number of games being produced, it’s challenging for developers to get noticed,” Lu mentioned. He believes that utilizing Discord for game development offers an opportunity for content creators to connect with audiences who will appreciate their games.
