Ex-Riot Games Staff Utilize Advanced AI to Enhance Non-Playable Characters in Upcoming Video Game

by admin

Jam & Tea Studios, a burgeoning name in the gaming industry, is pioneering the use of generative AI to enhance how players engage with game characters not controlled by humans, known as non-playable characters (NPCs).

Conventionally, NPCs in video games follow predefined scripts, leading to interactions that can quickly become monotonous and unrealistic, thus limiting the variety of player experiences. Incorporating generative AI, on the other hand, allows for more natural conversations and interactions with NPCs, providing players with the freedom to shape these exchanges more organically (within certain confines).

The venture, established by seasoned professionals from Riot Games, Wizards of the Coast, and Magic: The Gathering, disclosed last Friday its inaugural game. This game is set to utilize generative AI to aid in gameplay mechanics, generating content, dialogue, and items.

Retail Mage, the first offering from Jam & Tea, is an RPG where players inhabit the role of a wizard moonlighting as a sales clerk in an enchanted furniture store. The primary objective is to secure five-star ratings through customer assistance, though the game leaves it to the players whether they wish to fulfill their duties or stir up mayhem. Given that the customers are AI NPCs and human players have latitude to act and speak with great freedom, the game’s outcome possibilities are broadly divergent.

In Retail Mage, customer interactions are not limited to preselected responses. Players can input their desired responses into a text generator to interact with customers, such as asking the AI to provide “something charming,” yielding four distinct responses to choose from.

Jam & Tea is vying in the competitive arena of AI-enhanced NPCs, alongside peers such as Artificial Agency, Inworld, Nvidia, and Ubisoft with its AI-generated “Ghostwriter” for NPC dialogues.

The introduction of the game also aligns with a period marked by concern among creative talents regarding the challenges that generative AI might pose. The recent strike initiated by SAG-AFTRA, representing voice actors and other performers last month, underscores these concerns, targeting major gaming publishers over the implications of AI.

Nevertheless, Jam & Tea asserts a comprehensive approach to integrating AI, emphasizing the protection and appreciation of artists, writers, and other creative professionals within the game design process.

“We are of the firm belief that creative talents will become increasingly vital as we progress with employing this technology to deliver novel player experiences,” stated M. Yichao, co-founder and creative chief at Jam & Tea and former narrative designer notable for work on Guild Wars 2 and League of Legends, in a discussion with TechCrunch.

“AI may generate a plethora of dialogues, facilitating endless character interactions… Yet, the creative perspective is crucial to imbue meaning, crafting an impactful, profound, and emotionally resonant narrative. This artistic input is more critical than ever,” Yichao elaborated.

He detailed how creative professionals play a significant role in shaping NPCs, by defining their motivations, interests, backstories, and even providing sample lines to guide the AI in generating conversations that are tonally accurate in real-time.

Limitations of AI NPCs

While generative AI boasts several merits in NPC development, it isn’t without flaws. A key issue is the unpredictability of AI, which can lead to NPCs behaving erratically, potentially detracting from the gaming experience. Furthermore, AI has the propensity to generate responses that are incongruent with the game’s world.

Tackling these challenges involves continuous improvements to the AI engine, believes Yichao. Player feedback on NPC interactions serves as valuable data for refining NPC behavior. Moreover, Jam & Tea has established safeguards to avert inappropriate dialogues.

The game encourages creativity among players, fostering dynamic and inventive interactions, such as choosing to play games with the NPCs instead of adhering strictly to the main storyline, as seen in playtest scenarios.

“Our lead engineer discovered through playtesting that spontaneous moments, like initiating a game of hide and seek with NPCs, can emerge without preprogramming. These instances exemplify the novel experiences we aim to offer, where player intentions can dynamically alter the game,” shared Aaron Farr, co-founder and technical chief, and a former engineering senior at Riot Games and Singularity 6.

Throughout its development phase, the company has been evaluating various large language models (LLMs) including offerings from OpenAI, Google, Mistral AI, Meta, and others, to determine the most fitting model for the final game iteration, with the goal of optimizing character responses to be more accurately reflective of their roles.

Generate items out of thin air

The game’s AI capabilities extend beyond dialogue. Players have the freedom to interact with objects within the game environment, stating their intentions such as picking up or disassembling items. The game then assesses these actions for their success. For instance, a demo presented to TechCrunch showcased Yichao requesting an antelope-shaped plush from an NPC, which he successfully retrieved from a crate, demonstrating the game’s interpretative interaction mechanism.

Though Retail Mage starts as a relatively simple concept, Jam & Tea anticipates delivering a more refined product at launch than what was revealed in the preview. The game serves primarily to illustrate the potential applications of AI technology, while the company also develops another title, currently codenamed “Project Emily,” aimed at showcasing more complex environments and narratives.

With a modest but dedicated team of eight, Jam & Tea is poised to evolve alongside the advancing field of AI in gaming. The startup has secured $3.15 million in seed funding and plans another fundraising round later this year to support its growth and innovation.

Regarding its business model, the studio will price the game at $15, offering additional game packs for separate purchase. Initially launching on PC, there are prospective plans for cross-platform play in the coming years.

Retail Mage is targeted for public release later this fall.
