Two Oxford Doctorates Develop an App for Transforming Photos into Memes

by admin

In a recent development, Google introduced an innovative feature for its Pixel 9 series, enabling users to seamlessly include the photographer in group snapshots by substituting one person with another through a fresh shot. Contrastingly, a new application, crafted by two Oxford PhD holders, aims to incorporate friends into photographs in a manner that’s both engaging and meme-friendly.

Introducing Vybe, a mobile application that empowers users to place their selfie onto any image or pre-made template. Furthermore, it allows the interchange of faces among friends within group images. Significantly, the application adjusts the skin tone in the template to match the user’s, ensuring the face and body hues are in perfect harmony.

On Vybe, users gain the ability to discover their friends’ creations through a feed and have the liberty to contribute their own templates. The startup is optimistic that this feature will inspire a larger audience to engage with content creation on the app. Remarkably, Vybe boasts over 100,000 user-generated templates, a number that continues to soar with minimal effort required for creation.

The essence of this startup lies in its built-in social network, which aims to foster deeper connections among people. Presently concentrated on this feature, the startup aspires to expand its offerings to include additional photo and video editing tools, leveraging social, augmented reality (AR), and generative AI technologies.

Vybe successfully secured $4.75 million in a seed funding round, spearheaded by Stellation Capital, and reaped the benefits of contributions from Scribble Ventures, Coalition Operators, Neo, and Blueprint FTC. Notably, support also came from high-profile individuals like NFL athlete Kelvin Beachum and pioneering investors in Facebook and Uber, alongside Ali Partovi and OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil.

The brains behind Vybe are Dr. Mandela Patrick and Dr. Arnab Ghosh, both of whom hold PhDs from Oxford and have previously contributed their expertise to Meta and Snap, respectively. Dr. Patrick’s research pivoted around AI’s role in video and image comprehension, subsequently influencing Instagram Reels through his work on core AI algorithms. Dr. Ghosh delved into generative model research for image rendering, contributing to Snap’s launch of gen AI features like the Bitmoji backgrounds.

The founders shared their vision of crafting a social product enriched with network effect value, coupled with the conveniency of a one-click tool for blending faces in photos—a process that traditionally required significant time investment.

Ghosh recalls his experience at Snap, emphasizing the significance of minor details in fostering user adoption. “While Photoshop has been around for decades, Snap’s Lenses offered users a fresh and broad-ranging experience,” he reflected.

Although the market has seen face-swapping applications like Reface, the founders of Vybe are confident that the ease of template creation and their remixability will cultivate a thriving network.

Patrick draws parallels with successful social media platforms, stating, “Successful social products had a signature feature—Snapchat had its disappearing messages. We envision AI-enhanced photos with friends to serve as our signature offering.”

Vybe is exploring various monetization avenues, including brand collaborations, advertising, and subscription models, while also planning to introduce new features like support for videos and animations.

Stellation Capital’s founder, Peter Boyce II, commends the founders’ profound AI insights, deeming them instrumental for the platform’s success. He believes the simplicity and user-friendly nature of Vybe could propel it to mainstream popularity, stating, “The key to success lies in the technology receding into the backdrop, leaving a straightforward, enjoyable, and diverse engagement platform.”

BeReal encountered challenges with growth and revenue, leading to its acquisition by French game and app developer Voodoo, despite its innovative approach of prompt-based real-time sharing.

Vybe’s creators and backers are optimistic about its future, aiming for a platform that not only introduces new formats but also actively involves users in the creation process. However, they caution against inducing user fatigue with their innovations.

The app is currently available for both iOS and Android users.
