Wayve Gains Strategic Investment from Uber to Advance Autonomous Driving Technology in the UK

by admin

In a move to bolster its autonomous vehicle initiatives, Uber is investing in Wayve, a U.K. startup specializing in AI for automotive applications. This investment is part of Wayve’s recently announced $1.05 billion Series C funding round. Furthermore, Uber and Wayve are joining forces with car manufacturers to embed Wayve’s AI technology into consumer cars, which are anticipated to be accessible through Uber’s service platform eventually.

This collaboration announcement comes on the heels of Uber’s declaration last week that Cruise’s autonomous taxis are expected to be available via the Uber application by 2025. It represents the continuation of Uber’s endeavors to forge significant alliances in the realm of autonomous driving technology over the last several years.

While specific details of the Uber-Wayve alliance remain under wraps, Wayve has certainly made an impression since its inception in Cambridge in 2017. The startup has successfully secured over $1.3 billion in funding from notable investors like SoftBank Group, Nvidia, and Microsoft within the last two years.

Wayve is working on a pioneering self-learning technology for autonomous driving, drawing parallels to Tesla’s AI approach but with significant distinctions. Unlike Tesla, Wayve does not depend on Lidar; it leverages cameras and radar for its AI to interpret its surroundings. Importantly, Wayve’s technology is designed to be adopted by other car manufacturers, offering Level 2+ advanced driver-assistance systems and the potential for Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving features.

According to the SAE, Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving technologies denote systems capable of self-navigating in specific conditions. Level 3 systems require human drivers to remain prepared to intervene, while Level 4 systems do not. Currently, Wayve is still in the trial phase for its L2+ technology with safety drivers monitoring the operation in Jaguar I-Paces and Ford E-Transits and has yet to start testing Level 3 and Level 4 technologies.

The specifics of Wayve’s agreement with Uber are yet to be disclosed in detail. Wayve has mentioned that the collaboration aims to foresee the integration of Wayve-powered autonomous vehicles into Uber’s network in the future.

The investment’s scale, the timeline for the incorporation of Wayve-enabled vehicles into Uber’s app, and whether these vehicles will possess full self-driving capability or merely advanced assistance systems remain confidential between Uber and Wayve.

Alex Kendall, Wayve’s CEO and co-founder, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting its potential to significantly enhance the learning capacity of their AI for autonomous vehicles (AV), ensuring the technology’s safety and readiness for widespread application within Uber’s global network.

Kendall also emphasized the cooperative venture’s objective of accelerating the introduction of autonomous driving innovations to the market by working closely with car manufacturers.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, voiced his optimism regarding Wayve’s AI-driven approach, viewing it as promising for advancing towards a future dominated by shared, electric, and autonomous vehicles. Khosrowshahi welcomed Wayve as a pivotal ally in Uber’s quest to collaborate with automakers in perfecting the network for autonomous vehicles.

Lately, Uber has been actively establishing itself as a go-to partner for fledgling self-driving ventures aiming at commercialization. Last year saw Waymo’s autonomous taxis being integrated into Uber’s platform in Phoenix. Moreover, Uber has teamed up with companies specializing in autonomous sidewalk delivery robots, like Serve Robotics, Cartken, and Coco, as well as autonomous freight startups such as Waabi and Aurora, to incorporate autonomous driving capabilities into its Uber Eats and Uber Freight services.
