On Wednesday afternoon, Reddit’s digital platforms experienced a widespread outage, with outage tracking website Downdetector registering complaints from over 150,000 users by 1:30 p.m. PST. Those attempting to visit Reddit were greeted with an error stating, “Server error. Try again later.”
At 1:16 p.m. PST, Reddit acknowledged the issues on its status page, describing the situation as a “degraded status” for its website. However, the company reported that its technical teams had restored service around an hour later. A problematic software update was identified as the root cause of the disruption.
“A recent update inadvertently affected our platform’s stability earlier today,” Reddit representative Tim Rathschmidt explained in a communication to TechCrunch. “We have since implemented a solution and service has been restored.”
By 2:16 p.m., an update on Reddit’s status page indicated that the problem had been fully resolved following the deployment of a corrective measure.
According to historical data on its status page, Reddit has encountered few significant disruptions over the previous 90 days. While some users might still face access issues, the company assures that normal service should resume progressively.
