Apple Allegedly Trims 100 Positions in Books and Various Services Division

by admin

Apple is in the process of reducing its workforce, with cuts impacting approximately 100 individuals within the digital services division, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The reductions are primarily hitting the team behind the Apple Books app and its affiliated store.

Launched in 2010 alongside the iPad by the company’s then-CEO Steve Jobs, as seen in this presentation, Apple Books was envisioned to outperform competitors like Amazon’s Kindle. Despite these aspirations, the recent job eliminations suggest that Apple Books will no longer be a focal point of investment for the company. Additionally, employees from the Apple News platform and other service-related teams are also experiencing layoffs.

At the time of Apple’s most recent quarterly financial disclosure, its services sector accounted for 28% of total revenue, as highlighted in these results. A large chunk of this revenue is presumably generated from App Store subscriptions and in-app purchases. The future ability of Apple to sustain its dominant position in the application distribution market amidst evolving regulatory conditions remains uncertain.
