Elon Musk’s venture, X, is setting its sights on challenging LinkedIn in job listings and PayPal in payment processing. The company is now aiming to disrupt the video conferencing market, currently dominated by platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.
An employee at X, Chris Park, recently shared news of the company conducting its inaugural session using this tool. Park has reported positive initial reactions from colleagues and hinted at forthcoming features, such as pinning speakers and improved notifications for participant activity.
Elon Musk, the proprietor of X, gave his quasi-endorsement by replying with a fire emoji to Park’s announcement, showcasing an informal confirmation given X’s current policy of not engaging with media under Musk.
A prominent app researcher, known as P4mui, uncovered that the platform will enable users to initiate meetings through its iOS application, offering options for immediate or scheduled gatherings, aligning with functionalities provided by established conferencing tools.
Another researcher in the app field, Nima Owji, indicated that meeting hosts might have the capability to set distinct entry codes for sessions, enhancing the security and exclusivity of meetings.
As common with Musk’s innovations, specific details on the conference feature’s launch timeline or deployment strategy remain nebulous.
X is no stranger to live broadcasting, already offering video streaming via its Spaces feature. Given the convergence seen between platforms like Zoom and Google Meet, which toggle between conferencing and streaming, it wouldn’t be surprising to see X integrate these functionalities.
The introduction of this conferencing capability will be closely monitored, reminiscent of earlier this year when X unveiled its calling feature, activated by default for all users, raising privacy concerns over the absence of automatic IP masking.
Ahead of a general release, it’s imperative for X to thoroughly examine its privacy and security safeguards surrounding the new conferencing feature.
