Elon Musk has voiced his endorsement for California’s SB 1047, a legislative proposal demanding that developers of substantial AI systems put in place and detail preventive measures to avoid significant harm caused by these models.
“Making this decision wasn’t easy and it’s bound to displease some, however, after much consideration, I believe that advancing the SB 1047 AI safety legislation in California is the right move,” he shared on X one Monday afternoon. “I have advocated for the regulation of AI akin to how we oversee any other potentially hazardous product/technology for more than two decades now.”
Musk, who leads a prominent AI model enterprise, xAI, finds himself in the interesting position of supporting SB 1047 even though it would impose new regulations on his company, despite his plans to move out of California. He has historically expressed concerns over the risks of uncontrolled AI.
On the other hand, competitive firm OpenAI has taken a stance against this bill, throwing its weight behind a different legislative proposal.
