Pavel Durov, the architect and leader of the popular communication platform Telegram, found himself under arrest on a Saturday evening. This incident occurred as he was departing from his private aircraft at Bourget airport in France, as reported by the French TV network TF1 according to their coverage.
The news of Durov’s detention led to a flurry of discussions and speculations across various social media platforms, including Telegram itself. It appears these conversations were predominantly grounded in a select few French media sources. As of this writing, there has been no official comment from Telegram or from a representative of France’s ONAF, the national anti-fraud bureau.
TF1’s report suggests that Durov became the subject of a French arrest warrant following initial investigations by the police. It is claimed by the French authorities that Telegram’s apparent leniency on content moderation and its reluctance to engage with law enforcement agencies render Durov complicit in illegal activities reportedly facilitated through the app, including drug trafficking, money laundering, and the distribution of child exploitation material.
Forbes assesses Durov’s fortune to be around $15.5 billion. Durov, originally from Russia, opted for self-imposed exile in 2014, after he defied government demands to hand over information about Ukrainian protest organizers from his earlier venture, Vkontakte. Currently residing in Dubai, where Telegram’s headquarters are located, Durov was arriving from Azerbaijan when the arrest took place.
Last month, Durov disclosed that Telegram was nearing a milestone of 950 million active users, with an ambitious target to hit the 1 billion mark within the year. Despite its vast user base, the company operates with a surprisingly modest team of about 30 engineers, emphasizing Durov’s critical role in Telegram’s daily and strategic functions.
