Former Staffers Voice Discontent yet Unsurprised Over OpenAI’s Stance Against SB 1047

by admin

Two ex-OpenAI researchers, who departed from the company earlier this year due to concerns over safety issues, expressed their disillusionment yet lack of surprise at OpenAI’s stance against California’s SB 1047 bill, designed to avert AI-related catastrophes. Daniel Kokotajlo and William Saunders had previously asserted that OpenAI’s pursuit of supremacy is characterized by “recklessness.”

They mention in a communication shared with Politico, aimed at persuading Governor Gavin Newsom of California to enact the legislation, “Sam Altman, once our leader, had consistently advocated for the regulation of AI. Yet, faced with concrete legislative proposals, he finds himself in opposition.” They further note, “We remain hopeful that with the right regulatory framework, OpenAI could still achieve its goal of developing AGI in a safe manner.”

Meanwhile, Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI, has shown its support for the proposed law, albeit with certain reservations and suggestions for modifications, many of which have been integrated. Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO, penned a letter to Newsom on Thursday stating that despite not giving it full support, he believes the legislation’s “advantages likely surpass the drawbacks,” highlighting a nuanced view towards the bill.
