Ex-Expedia Executive’s New Venture Employs AI to Simplify Travel Booking for Small Businesses

by admin

Lacking a travel desk, small firms and emerging startups often resort to traditional methods, relying heavily on personal assistants or navigating through cumbersome travel applications.

Michael Gulmann, previous Senior Vice President of consumer product at Expedia, is leveraging AI technology to fill this void. His venture, Otto, is set to break new ground on Thursday, introducing an alpha version of its platform to a select group of U.S. early adopters this September. Otto is engineered to expedite the process of booking flights and accommodations using intuitive language commands.

In its initial funding round, Otto secured $6 million, spearheaded by Madrona Ventures and supported by Direct Travel. The investment round also saw contributions from angel investors, including former top executives from major companies like Expedia, Ortbiz, Uber, and Farecast.

The start-up plans to channel the raised funds into product enhancement and the recruitment of skilled engineers, aiming for a sustainable operation over the next two years.

Gulmann shared with TechCrunch his perspective that while platforms such as TravelPerk and Concur are designed with large corporations in mind, Otto aims to cater to those currently underserved by the market.

“Imagine Otto as your premium travel consultant or an executive secretary who not only recalls your preferred airlines and accommodation but also remembers details like how close you prefer to be to your meeting venues,” explained Gulmann.

This approach ensures users need not re-specify their preferences with each use, nor swap between different travel services and mapping applications.

Furthermore, Otto is programmed to proactively update booking details and schedules. For example, should your preferred accommodation be unavailable, Otto will suggest an alternative in close proximity.

In cases where Otto encounters difficulties finalizing bookings, the operation is seamlessly transferred to a Direct Travel associate to complete the booking, although Gulmann anticipates such instances will be few and far between, pending broader user feedback.

Steve Singh, managing director at Madrona and the acting CEO of Spotnana, led the seed funding for Otto. Singh, who also played a pivotal role in acquiring Direct Travel (one of Otto’s investors), will serve as Otto’s executive chairman, as per recent announcements.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Singh voiced his conviction about Otto’s potential to carve a niche within the business travel market.

“A significant portion of business travel remains unmanaged because existing solutions are beyond the financial reach of smaller enterprises. Otto shines here by acting like your personal executive assistant or a travel agent, simplifying the process,” he remarked.

Otto benefits from a robust network of investors and advisors, tapping into valuable flight and travel databases through partnerships with organizations like Direct Travel and Spotnana to support bespoke travel queries.

Gulmann highlighted unique service offerings, such as finding hotels with specific amenities like rooftop bars, which are often not filter options on conventional travel platforms. Otto aims to deliver superior customization for its users by incorporating diverse hotel and airline scheduling data.

The company is refining generic AI models with its proprietary data to ensure cost-effective operations while maximizing affiliate revenue generated through bookings.

Otto’s strategy includes deploying bots for booking transactions, anonymizing travel IDs, and analyzing data to minimize inaccuracies or anomalies. The deployment of distinct agents and models for various tasks aims to keep errors to a bare minimum.

With the alpha launch, Otto is on a path to perfection, looking forward to broadening access through a beta version by year’s end and aiming for a wider release in early 2025, according to Gulmann.

Singh foresees a future where Otto provides exceedingly personalized travel arrangements, allowing users to initiate complex bookings with simple commands, informed by historical preferences and data analysis.
