In a throwback to the days of Myspace, Instagram has unveiled a novel feature enabling users to personalize their profiles with music. This update was introduced in partnership with musician Sabrina Carpenter, who gave her followers a sneak peek of her upcoming song “Taste” via her Instagram profile, just before her album’s launch on Friday.
To feature a song on your profile, navigate to “edit profile” and browse the available titles in Instagram’s music catalog. Similar to selecting music for Reels or Stories on Instagram, you may choose a clip up to 30 seconds in length by sliding left or right. In contrast to Myspace, the music won’t start playing automatically when someone visits your profile; it requires clicking the play button to listen.
Altering or removing the chosen song is simple – revisit “edit profile” or tap the song directly on your profile to make changes.
Instagram initiated tests with profile music in 2022, seeking to enrich users’ profiles by offering a new avenue for them to express their musical preferences and amplify their creative identity on the platform. The feature builds on past enhancements such as adding music to Stories introduced in 2018, followed by the ability to incorporate music into Notes and photo carousels last year.
Launching this feature taps into a longing for the simpler, early days of social media. Innovative apps, like Noplace—a text-oriented social platform targeting Gen-Z with customizable, vibrant profiles—are striving to be perceived as the contemporary Myspace.
With this move, Instagram is positioning itself against a backdrop of emerging social media platforms aiming to capture the next wave of users, as appetite for the longstanding social behemoth shows signs of waning. New entrants like BeReal, Daylyy, Palmsy, Lapse, Whee, among others, are keen examples of this trend.
