In a recent turn of events, an AI-generated fake audio clip imitating President Biden was broadcasted to individuals in New Hampshire, leading to a rapid response from the FCC. The commission identified the responsible party as the Life Corporation, a Texas entity previously linked to similar deceptive practices, imposing a hefty $6 million penalty on them and an affiliated person. Additionally, the involvement of a notorious, versatile telecom known by various names including Lingo Telecom (formerly Ameritel, Excel, Impact, Startec, Trinsic, etc.) was noted, which has been connected to dubious activities in the past. This entity is now set to settle with a $1 million civil fine and has committed to adhere to regulatory guidelines henceforward.
It’s imperative for telecom companies such as Lingo to avoid facilitating fraudulent activities by offering services to disreputable entities. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized, “Communication service providers play a crucial role in safeguarding against these tactics and will be rigorously penalized for negligence.”
