Leading AI companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Stability AI are under scrutiny for their methods of data collection and alleged infringement on intellectual property rights in the course of developing their essential technologies. In this context, a new player, Story, emerges with an announcement of securing $80 million in funds, proposing a blockchain solution to empower IP holders to better monitor their content’s usage.
S.Y. Lee, CEO and co-founder of Story, expresses the company’s vision to foster a “sustainable” ecosystem for IP suitable for the digital age’s next wave of consumers and creators. The startup envisions treating IP as modular blocks, akin to Lego, with blockchain at its core to facilitate this vision. “This allows for the free remix and adaptation of your IP, while still enabling you to benefit from it,” Lee remarked in a discussion with TechCrunch, despite the slightly ironic comparison to Lego, famous for its own IP protection efforts.
The investment round is spearheaded by Andreessen Horowitz, particularly through its a16z crypto wing, and includes contributions from Polychain Capital, along with individuals like Scott Trowbridge from Stability AI, Adrian Cheng of K11, and renowned digital art collector Cozomo de’ Medici, who adopted a Renaissance-inspired pseudonym. This Series B financing increment elevates Story and its parent company PIP Labs’ total funding to $143 million.
Story stands at the forefront of innovation with its conception of an “IP blockchain”—a framework that aspires to enable creators to assert control over their content, define how it’s used, and facilitate its licensing. The exact functionalities of this system remain to be fully disclosed.
The company plans to use the new funds to refine its product for a market launch intended for later this year, according to Lee. Currently, Story is expanding its user base through an invitation-only beta version.
Already, the platform boasts over 200 teams and “more than 20 million addressable IPs,” following collaborations with various entities including the fashion design tool Ablo, Japanese comic hub Sekai, and collaboration platform Magma.
Chris Dixon of a16z, alongside Carra Wu, sees the venture as pivotal for redefining economic models in arts and creativity, disrupted by generative AI amongst other technological advancements. Dixon emphasizes the necessity for new revenue models in a world where AI and new tech are rapidly changing the landscape of digital content creation and ownership.
Dixon highlights the emergence of AI-driven search engines and social networks inundated with AI-created content, which often fails to acknowledge the human creators. He questions the future incentive for original content creation in the absence of proper attribution and compensation.
While AI is a major consumer of content, Story is not alone in tackling IP management challenges in the AI domain. Another recent entrant, Sahara AI, has secured $43M in funding to develop its solution for IP tracking and monetization amidst the AI tech evolution.
“Story sets itself apart from Sahara by focusing on the IP and data layers specific to AI solutions, as opposed to the broader AI infrastructure,” Lee mentioned. He sees potential for reciprocal partnerships with entities like Sahara, aiming at comprehensive IP solutions.
Lee, drawing from his expansive background including founding a journalism platform, byline.com, and a serialized fiction app Radish—later sold to Kakao for $440M—views Story as a logical extension of his previous ventures and experiences in the digital content arena.
He reflects on the financial dynamics of content generation and distribution, considering his past venture with Radish. Lee aims to pioneer a model through Story that diverts from conventional marketing expenditure, opting instead for direct creator empowerment.
The model’s success and its reception by creators remain open questions. However, investors are optimistic about its potential to reshape the future of content and IP management.
Olaf Carlson-Wee of Polychain Capital envisions Story as having an impact on the content and IP world analogous to Bitcoin’s influence on finance. He sees the advancements in AI as a catalyst for a new phase in Web3, poised to revolutionize IP.
